Remembering Robo Shankar: A Ray of Laughter Dimmed Too Soon

Tribute & Remembrance
18 September 2025

Tamil cinema lost one of its brightest entertainers today as actor-comedian Robo Shankar passed away at just 46.
Known for his unmistakable energy, expressive humour, and heart-warming performances, Robo Shankar’s journey from stage mimicry
to the silver screen remains a story of grit, gratitude, and boundless talent.

A Journey of Heart and Humour:

Born Shankar Ramasamy in Madurai, he began as a stage performer with his now-famous “robot dance,”
earning the nickname Robo Shankar. He captured hearts through Kalakka Povathu Yaaru?
and Siricha Pochu before transitioning into films like Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara,
Maari, Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, Viswasam, and Cobra. Every role—comic, emotional, or
villainous—carried his signature sincerity and charm.

What made Robo Shankar stand out was how real he felt onscreen.
Off-camera, his humility, warmth, and willingness to mentor younger artists earned him respect across the industry.

He also lent his voice as a dubbing artist — notably, he voiced Pumbaa in the Tamil-dubbed versions of The Lion King (2019) and Mufasa (2024)

Robo Shankar was hospitalized after collapsing on the film set in Chennai.
Despite doctor's efforts, he succumbed to complications from gastrointestinal bleeding and multi-organ failure.
Tributes have poured in from across India—Kamal Haasan, MK Stalin,
and many others celebrated him as an artist who brought “laughter with meaning” and “emotion with depth.

Rest in peace, Robo Shankar. Thank you for the laughter, the sincerity, and the characters that will live on in our memory.
Though your voice is silenced, your imprint in Tamil cinema — and in the hearts of millions — will never fade.

With gratitude for the joy you brought to every frame,
the team at HARRY Productions will miss you deeply.
